Dress for Caress

Day 16

The Pleasure Spectrum

The many kinds of orgasm, and how to turn them up

In a tiny ramen shop in Osaka, I stood in front of a vending machine for a full five minutes with my mouth open.

The machine had a picture of every bowl. Beneath the pictures sat a row of little dials. Firmness of the noodles, from soft to very firm. Richness of the broth, from light to heavy.

Spice, from none to volcanic. Amount of garlic, amount of oil, amount of green onion. I stood there in the glow of the machine, a grown woman with a black belt in indecision. I understood it with total clarity.

A bowl of ramen was far more customizable than I knew.

A grandmother behind me in line cleared her throat politely. I stepped aside. She tapped six buttons without a pause, collected her ticket, and disappeared into the shop. She knew precisely what she liked.

I thought of her again some months later. A friend asked me what orgasms are “supposed to feel like.” I wanted to bring her to that machine.

There is a whole menu of orgasms. Each one has its own dials, firmness and richness and spice. Every woman is the grandmother at the machine. She knows how to order, or she is about to learn.

In this section we read the menu. Then we learn the dials.

Part One: The Menu

Women describe their peaks in many ways, and the research finds the same variety. None of these is better than another, and none is required. They are simply the dishes on offer. Every woman can order her favorite.

The outside kind. Many women feel their peaks most clearly in the button and the neighborhood around it. The sensation is often sharp, bright, and focused. It is a clean peak that rises and breaks.

The inside kind. Some women describe a deeper, broader, more diffuse feeling. It is a slow, rolling warmth from the center of the body.

It may involve the front wall of the kitty, the womb, and the deep muscles of the floor. It can feel more like a tide than a spark.

The blended kind. Many women meet both together, a bright outer peak and a deep inner wave arriving at once. They call it fuller and rounder than either alone.

Many women also report different kinds on different days. One woman may love the bright kind on Monday and crave the deep kind on Saturday. The menu changes with mood, rest, hormones, setting, and company. None of it is a verdict.

Multiples

For some women, the body stays ready after one peak. A second, a third, or more can follow.

For many women, the first peak makes the second easier. The blood is flowing, the nerves are awake, and the muscles are warm. For others, the button becomes tender after a peak. They need a pause, a softer touch, or a different kind of attention first.

Researchers find wide differences here. The difference has little to do with talent or desire. It comes down to the body, the moment, and the pace.

Some women have one deeply satisfying peak and are done. They have everything they need. Others enjoy several. Others prefer one long, slow peak that rolls on and on.

Multiples are a possibility, never a standard. A woman delighted with one has everything she needs.

Intensity And Duration

Peaks vary enormously in size and length. Some last a few seconds, and others roll on for half a minute or longer. Some feel like a soft ripple, and others like a full-body weather system.

The biggest peaks often arrive with several things lined up at once. Rest, relaxation, a slow build, a feeling of safety, and a mind done keeping score all help.

The smaller ones are just as real. They are the everyday meals of a happy life. They are every bit as nourishing.

Orgasm From Other Places

The body has many pleasure maps. A woman’s peak can be reached by more routes than the famous ones.

Researchers led by Barry Komisaruk studied the brain during nipple stimulation. The areas that respond to genital sensation also light up. This points to a rich connection between this part of the body and the rest.

For some women, attention to the breasts adds greatly to arousal. A smaller number reach a peak from that alone.

Other women feel pleasure build from the neck, the ears, the inner thighs, the lower back, the feet, or the soft skin of the wrists. The skin is one long, continuous organ. It responds to the right touch, the right warmth, and the right moment.

All of this is optional, and all of it is personal. Some places on your body may hold no interest for you. Leave them be.

Surprised by a place? That is a gift.

A Quiet Word About Fluid

Some women notice a gush of fluid at the height of arousal or at the peak. Some find the experience startling.

Researchers are still working out its source. Some studies point to small glands near the pee hole, often called the Skene’s glands. Some suggest it contains a mix of substances. Women describe it differently, and the research disagrees.

This much is clear. Many perfectly healthy women experience it. Many perfectly healthy women never do.

Does it happen to you? It is natural, and it is a sign of a body thoroughly enjoying itself. A towel is a lovely companion, and so is a sense of humor.

Does it never happen? You are missing nothing.

Orgasm In Sleep

Here is a quiet surprise from the history books. In the middle of the twentieth century, the researcher Alfred Kinsey and his colleagues interviewed thousands of people about their sexual lives. A good number of women told them of orgasm in their sleep. Some had a dream with it and some had none at all.

Think about it. A peak can arrive with no touch whatsoever. The mind and the body simply talk quietly to each other in the dark.

It is one of the earliest hints of a road beyond touch, and a gentle foreshadowing of everything in the upper rooms of this house.

Some women wake from such a moment amazed. Others sleep through it. They only know in the morning, by a pleasant warmth and a mysterious smile.

Every Woman Has Her Own Pattern

Put the whole menu together, and one idea stands out. There is no standard woman.

Each of us has a pattern. It holds a favorite kind, a favorite place, a favorite pace, a favorite setting, a favorite time of the month, and a handful of surprises. The pattern shifts over a lifetime. It can change after a baby, a move, a loss, a love, or a long vacation.

Watch your own pattern with curiosity. Skip the comparisons. You become an expert in the only subject here worth knowing.

Part Two: Turning The Dial

The grandmother in the ramen shop had a gift. Anyone can learn it. She knew which dials she could turn. She turned them with confidence.

Here are your dials. Each one is a variable. You can adjust it in a session, and it changes the flavor. Try one at a time, and notice.

Dial One: The Wave

Arousal rises in waves. It builds, it plateaus, and it releases. Many women spend most of their time near the top of the first rise. They rush toward the peak at the first chance.

Try letting the wave build longer. Stay at a pleasant height and breathe. Let it level off, without pushing it over. Then let it rise again, a little higher.

Many women get a much larger peak from two or three slow rises than from one quick climb.

Think of climbing a hill with several lookout points. At each one, pause and enjoy the view.

Dial Two: The Breath

Your breath is the steering wheel of the whole experience.

Slow, deep breathing deepens the wave and spreads the sensation through the body. Fast, shallow breathing sharpens it and speeds things up. A brief hold at the top can intensify the peak. A long, slow sigh on the exhale can let it roll on.

Play with the pattern. In for four, out for six is a calm and steady place to begin. Then try a slower rhythm, then a faster one, and notice what changes.

A single breath, taken at the right moment, can change an entire session. Women often say so.

Dial Three: The Floor

The pelvic floor is the other half of the controls.

A gentle lift of the floor adds focus and intensity. A full release lets the wave spread and soften. Many women learn to ride the rhythm. They lift on the rise and release at the crest, breathing with their whole pelvis.

This is the same practice as the lift and the release, now put to work. Know your floor better and you steer more finely.

Dial Four: Variety

Routine is comforting, and it can also flatten pleasure. The same thing in the same way every time can fade the sensation, like a favorite song played on repeat for a month.

Here are some gentle ways to refresh it. Change the room, the hour, the lighting, or the music. Change the fabric you wear.

Change the position. Change the pace. Change the story in your head.

One change at a time is enough. The goal is to wake the senses, and a single new note can do it.

Dial Five: Attention

Your mind’s focus is as powerful as anything you do with your body.

Try moving your attention in a slow circuit. Start with the sensation in the center of the body. Then let your awareness drift to your breath, then to the warmth in your thighs, then to the sounds in the room, and then back to the center. Each pass freshens the feeling.

Or try narrowing it. Look at a single point of sensation through a very small window. The feeling may become surprisingly vivid.

For many women, a calm, curious attention is worth more than any technique.

Myth card There Is A Best Kind Of Orgasm

THE MYTH: Some kinds of orgasm are better, more advanced, or more real than others.

THE TRUTH: The menu is a menu. Every kind ranks equal, and the best one is your favorite.

Love the bright, quick kind? You have missed nothing. Love the deep, slow kind?

You have missed nothing either. Each is a complete meal.

The Skeptical Friend asks What If I Only Have One Kind?

Then you have a favorite, and that is a fine thing to have.

Many women have a single dependable route, and many are perfectly happy there for life. Curious about more? The dials in this section give you gentle ways to explore.

Content with your one dish, cooked just the way you like it? You are in excellent company.

Seduction craft Pause At The Top

Couples love this piece of seduction craft.

The evening is building. Pause. Stop for a breath, look into each other’s eyes, and smile.

Let the warmth hang in the air for a long moment. Then begin again, a little slower.

The pause is delicious. It raises the temperature, and it builds anticipation. It tells your partner, wordlessly, that you are in no hurry. Learn to pause, and you will be remembered with great affection.

A happy discovery Tamar And The Morning Smile

Tamar woke up one Sunday with a warm, drowsy glow. Something wonderful seemed to have happened.

She lay there for a while, puzzled. The sun came through the curtains. She remembered a dream. She could not quite catch it.

It had something to do with a boat and a long, slow sea. Her body felt loose and golden. She was smiling for no clear reason.

She asked her older cousin about it, over coffee, in a whisper. The cousin laughed. “That happens,” she said.

“It is one of the oldest things in the world. Your body had a little party without you.”

“I got away with something. That is how it felt,” Tamar told me.

Have you ever woken with that mysterious smile? Then you are among the many women with this experience. Write down the date, and enjoy the memory.

A Story: The Slow Tide

The house at the beach had a long porch and a hammock at one end of it. The sunset went on for the better part of an hour.

Mina lay in the hammock in a light linen sarong, the one with the faded blue stripes. Her bare feet hung over the edge. A glass of iced tea sweated on the boards beside her.

Down on the sand, the tide came in with a slow, steady hush. In and out. In and out.

Daniel came out of the house with a towel over his shoulder, saw her, and stopped. “Don’t get up,” he said. “I am coming to you.”

He sat on the porch boards beside the hammock. He rested one hand on her ankle, bare skin under warm air. “Tell me what the tide is doing,” he said.

She closed her eyes. “It comes in,” she said slowly. “It stays a minute.

It goes out a little. It comes in again, a bit farther.”

“Good,” said Daniel. “Do that.”

So she breathed with the water. In for four. Out for six. The tide went out, and her shoulders dropped.

The tide came in, and a soft tingling warmth rose from her belly into her chest, a little higher than before. Daniel’s thumb traced slow, lazy circles on the bone of her ankle. He did not hurry. He did not speak.

The light turned apricot, then rose. The hammock rocked. Mina felt her whole body begin to ride the sea, rising and falling, rising and falling.

Each rise was a little warmer, each fall a little sweeter. The horizon dissolved. She was no more than a pulse of gold in the dusk.

The last light went, and she opened her eyes. Daniel smiled at her like a man smiling at a sunset.

“Again?” he asked softly. She laughed, a low, drowsy sound, and held out her hand.

“Slowly,” she said.

The dare Change One Dial

This takes about thirty minutes. Do it once, and repeat it freely.

First, read the menu. Mark the familiar lines. Next to each one, write a single word, such as “yes,” “sometimes,” or “curious.”

Then choose one dial from the five, the wave, the breath, the floor, variety, or attention. Run a single session and change only that dial.

Perhaps you slow the wave and let it rise three times. Perhaps you try a new breath rhythm. Perhaps you change the room or the song.

Afterward, write down what changed. “Nothing much” is a fine answer.

You may notice: a flicker of recognition, a small surprise, a sense of control, a freshening of something familiar, or a happy shrug. All of those are right answers.

SKIP IF: Any of it feels like pressure, or anything hurts. Put the book down and do something kind. The dials will wait.

Log: your dial, and one word for your observation.

The naughty encore Turn One Dial

Garment: a plain cotton thong, the everyday kind. Position: lying on your back with your bottom close to the wall and your legs straight up it, then slid wide into a V.

Pick one dial, and give it a turn. Lie with your seat near the wall and let your legs rest against it. Slide your feet apart into a wide V. The blood warms and rushes in your hips.

Begin with a slow circle over your button through the thin cotton. After a few minutes, change exactly one thing. Make the circle slower. Or press harder.

Or switch to a gentle tapping. Or take your hand away completely, breathe, and begin again.

Imagine a stranger across the room conducting you with a single finger. Up. Hold. Down.

You follow the orchestra. Your thong is soaked, and your hips lift at each beat.

Try the pause at the top. Let the wave build, then lift your hand away and breathe. Let it ebb a little. Then return, and the next wave rises higher.

Repeat three times, each wave bigger than the last. On the fourth, do not pause. Press, circle, and let it come all the way.

Out and about: press your thighs together and vary the squeeze, firm, light, firm, light. Keep time with a secret song in your head.

The Private Wing

The Private Wing has a printable menu and dial worksheet, audio sessions for each of the five dials, and a longer collection of women’s own descriptions of the many kinds of orgasm.
